How would you define what an illusion is?

To me, an illusion is something or idea that one or many may perceive but may not necessarily be true.

Do you think they exist in society?

I do think they exist on a number of levels throughout society.

How might they affect people?

For some illusion can be a type of escapism, it can become an art form, such as Visual Art, "magic", or even music.  However, illusions can create the negative counter effect of delusion which can create chaos and conflct.

Do you think it shapes the way people make decisions?

Like I mentioned earlier, if one operates under the assumption that the illusion is reality, they are actually being delusional. Their beliefs are not operating in the same space as objective reality. This can obviously impact the decisions that you make, whether they be small decisions or even larger more globally impactful ones.

How about act (in regards to the last question)?

Depending on one views illusion, it will affect the way in which they act. If one is able to recognize the illusion and abstractly reason or extrapolate it vs. accept illusion as reality, those two people will act quite differently.

Do you think, based on their illusions and disillusions, people express themselves differently?

Yes. In fact if you think about it, this is the crux of conflict in our religious and political systems we have now. Based on our individual experiences, which combine objective reality with elements of illusion (in presentation at least) we begin to formulate opinions unique to us.

Can you think of any examples of this?

As I mentioned earlier, this a common cause of conflict. As a hypothetical imagine "Country A". with it's own deeply held beliefs, is under the illusion that it has been wronged by "Country B". Meanwhile "Country B" operates under the illusion that since they have had conflict with Country A in the past, this must be more of the same. The result of which would be conflict between both countries, under the assumption of an illusion as reality (delusion).

How about an art form?

Absolutely. Don't take my previous answers as an indictment of illusion as a concept. Illusion can be a very positive and essential force in the art world. In art terms, we view illusion more as an attempt to bring very real concepts into terms that will connect emotionally with the consumer of the art. Illusions generally appeal to our emotional side anyway. In visual art, this could take the obvious form of the optical illusion, where different perspectives on a piece may create totally different results. In literature, it is the description of a scene that may take the reader into his or her own fantasy. In music, it is a much more nebulous concept as (especially in instrumental music) there aren't always words to describe the illusion of the artist.

Do you think people tend to express their illusions and disillusions through art?

Absolutely, though it might not always be the intention of the artist to impart his or her own illusions or delusions into a work of art, often times that is what they inadvertently do.

If so, can you come up with an example of this?

To take a piece of music you and I have talked about use John Cage's 4'33". Cage's intention with this piece was to not put any of his musical personality or bias into his art, by creating a silent space. He operated under the illusion that traditional music had run its course and that the only true "new" music would come from the destruction of the older forms. Inadvertently though, by having such a revolutionary stand with this piece he planted his illusions, beliefs, and personality smack into the crux of his pieces. In fact 4'33" is probably the most easily identifiable Cage piece left.

Do you believe that overtime this peron's art will change?  Or will the art stay the same?

It can change depending on the perspective of the artist. Artists are very much people. Like all adults, our perceptions change over time. For some adults and artists it may change drastically over the years. Other adults and artists (Like you probably have noticed) don't change very much at all. It would be natural then that the art reflects that. As a musician I will use 2 musical examples. For and example of change look at the legendary Miles Davis. Davis began his career a jazz traditionalist in the 1940's, but then became a pioneer in Bebop, Cool, and Fusion Jazz as his perceptions on the direction and influences of music grew. For a static artistic example look at someone like John Cage again. He abandoned the idea of tonality and musical structure early on in his career and never really changed that perspective throughout his life.

For those of you who do not know the piece, here is John Cage's 4'33"

How would you define what an illusion is?

An illusion is a false image or understanding about the reality of the world.

Do you think they exist in society?

Do people have such misunderstandings? Certainly, which means that they do exist.

How might they affect people?

People react in all sorts of ways because of various illusions that they have.

Do you think it shapes the way people make decisions?

 Definitely.

How about act (in regards to the last question)?

 Definitely.

Do you think, based on their illusions and disillusions, people express themselves differently?

Differently than they would have if they had a more accurate image or understanding of reality?  Yes, of course.

Can you think of any examples of this?

If someone believes that a wind from the west means rain, he or she may decide to leave home with an umbrella.  If, however, this belief is incorrect, a decision has been made based on the illusion.

how about an art form?

Not sure how to answer this

Do you think people tend to express their illusions and disillusions through art?

Yes, and even after people realize something is an illusion, they can choose to do art about the incorrect perception.

If so, can you come up with an example of this?

An artist may be believe a politician is a great leader and begin a great portrait, but then learn that the politician was morally or politically bad or ineffective, but may still continue the artwork.

Do you believe that overtime this peron's art will change?  Or will the art stay the same?

I believe that artists' work probably changes as the artists themselves change.

Give an example of both if you can.

Using my previous example, the artist could choose to finish the work in the same way it was begun, or could to try to use the art to give hints about the leader's drawbacks somehow.

How would you define what an illusion is?

 - I would define an illusion as a deception, something that is not real

Do you think they exist in society?

 - well yeah, ther are a lot of illusions in society

How might they affect people?

- um, well I guess an example would be social media is kind of like an illusion

because it is like an illusion that makes it seem like youre friends with people, friends with more people than you actually are, and you are connected, but you really aren't.  So it could inflate people's self worth, like they get a lot of likes on their photos so they think they're really popular.

Do you think it shapes the way people make decisions?

yeah, definately.  If you're under the effect of an illusion, then you are going to make different choices because you believe that the illusion is real so you are not thinking objectively when you are making your decisions

Do you think, based on their illusions and disillusions, people express themselves differently?

Art reflects the world around us and someone is under an illusion that's their perception of the world, then they're going to present the world differently, present themselves differently.

Can you think of any examples of this?

if someone who thinks they're really short, but they're really not then they are going to wear a lot of high heels

How about an art form?

1984 was written by George Orwell at the time when communism in Russia was becoming more prevalent and a lot of people did not really see it for what it was at the time.  It was kind of like an illusion, like "Oh Russia is our ally in World War Two", so really, we arent going to bother thinking about the tyrany that their government is doing.  But George Orwell was disillusioned by what he saw through what the communist government was going to become and he wrote 1984, wwhuch exposed tyrany in the government in order to break that illusion.

Do you believe that overtime this peron's art will change?  Or will the art stay the same?

George Orwell's writing never changed as far as I'm aware.  He wrote Animal Farm after that, which was even more condeming of communism

So then do you think it changed?

I guess he had a more negative view of communism because that was written later, I think, and that was when things were getting "worse" in Russia.  So yes, he became more disillusioned overtime

How would you define what an illusion is?

 - An illusion is a mirage or an image that a person can see or believe.

Do you think they exist in society?

 -Yes illusions exist in society.

How might they affect people?

 - Illusions influence a person’s judgment a lot and can cause them to act out in many different ways.

Do you think it shapes the way people make decisions?

 -Yes it does.

How about act (in regards to the last question)?

-Yes illusions affect how they act.

Do you think, based on their illusions and disillusions, people express themselves differently?

 -Yes people do.

Can you think of any examples of this?

-Some illusions are what people think are cool or hot and in style so they dress differently and express themselves in a different manner trying to be what they think cool is.

How about an art form?

- Yeah art is a very expressive thing that each individual is able to create a unique style to express their own illusions and emotions.

Do you think people tend to express their illusions and disillusions through art?

 - Yes, art is the ultimate medium for people to express their emotions (illusions)

If so, can you come up with an example of this?

 -  Painter, writers, artists in general use their art to express their illusions, their emotions.

Do you believe that overtime this person's art will change?  Or will the art stay the same?

 - I believe that overtime a person’s art does change. But it kind of depends on the art form. Artists change their art but many writers do not change their art.

Give an example of both if you can.

- If you look at many great artists, their styles evolve and change as they discover new muses. However in other forms of art like writing and poetry many of these writers only write using one style and do not change it.
